Rainbow of colours.

A riot of colours in the work of artist Kate O’Brien and brightly coloured stitched textiles by Michelle Barnard.

Michelle’s evocative textile art incorporates patchwork, quilting, applique and exploring home, haven, a sense of belonging and comfort in unexpected places.
“Inspired by the places that I love, including cities, canals, beaches and particularly the Isle of Skye. There is an emotional element to my work, reflecting themes such as haven, escape, solitude, warmth and attachment to places.
I am fascinated by textures, shape and vibrant colour. I am also interested in exploring text and graffiti. Circular forms and organic, curved lines frequently feature in my designs. I love experimenting with many textile techniques, particularly patchwork, quilting, machine and hand stitch. I use a needle felting machine to create soft, distressed fabric surfaces.”

Kate’s vibrant ink and watercolour images of architecture, which contrast strong imagery with bleeding lines and vivid hues.
Being based in Manchester, but having grown up in Derbyshire, Kate takes great inspiration from both the dramatic natural beauty of the landscape and the solid architectural forms within and around the city.
“It is by presenting simple elements of my surroundings together that I aim to achieve a subtle balance of mood in my work in terms of both subject and medium.”

Kate will be exhibiting at Heaton Moor United Church

Michelle will be exhibiting at Belmont House
